Candles do more than light up a room—they create ambiance, evoke memories, and set the mood. To get the most out of your candles, proper care and usage are essential. Whether you’re a candle connoisseur or just getting started, these tips will ensure your candles burn beautifully and last as long as possible.

1. Trim the Wick

One of the simplest and most important steps in candle care is trimming the wick. Before each burn, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. This helps prevent large flames, sooty smoke, and uneven burning. A wick trimmer is a handy tool for this, but scissors work just as well.

2. Let It Burn to the Edge

On the first burn, allow the candle to burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the container. This prevents "tunneling," where wax builds up on the sides, leaving unused wax behind. A good rule of thumb is to burn the candle for one hour per inch of its diameter.

3. Burn Candles Safely

Safety first! Always place your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, curtains, or anything flammable. Never leave a burning candle unattended and keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

4. Avoid Burning for Too Long

While it might be tempting to leave your favorite candle burning all evening, try to limit each burn session to 3-4 hours. Burning a candle for too long can cause the wick to "mushroom," resulting in a larger flame, soot, and excessive heat.

5. Use a Candle Snuffer

Instead of blowing out your candle, use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame. This minimizes smoke and prevents hot wax from splattering.

6. Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Ensure the wax pool remains free of debris like wick trimmings, matches, or dust. These can act as secondary wicks, creating uneven burning and potentially unsafe conditions.

7. Store Candles Properly

To maintain their fragrance and appearance, store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Exposure to light and heat can cause discoloration and weaken the scent.

8. Know When to Stop Burning

When only about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the container, it’s time to say goodbye to your candle. Burning it past this point can cause the container to overheat and crack.

9. Repurpose Your Containers

Don’t toss out empty candle jars! After cleaning out any remaining wax, you can reuse the container for storage, planters, or decorative purposes.

10. Choose Quality Candles

Investing in high-quality candles can make a world of difference. They often have better wax formulas, longer burn times, and stronger, more consistent fragrances. Look for candles with natural waxes like soy or beeswax for a cleaner burn.
